Director: Ron Shelton

Release Date: 15 June 1988

Filming Locations: Asheville, North Carolina, USA; Durham Athletic Park – 426 Morris Street, Durham, North Carolina, USA; Burlington, North Carolina, USA; Greensboro, North Carolina, USA; Wilson, North Carolina, USA

Main Plot: This movie talks about the life of a girl named Annie Savoy, who purposely chose a guy on the baseball team to make her a boy toy. It’s her yearly tradition to make a process of choosing among baseball players and make their year of the league one of the best. Annie is now on the mission, and her target players are Ebby Calvin Laloosh, a wild neophyte pitcher with a wicked fastball who can’t aim due to his overall self-confidence. The catcher Crash Davis, the veteran who only went under minor leagues for twelve years and was brought to harness and only under  Ebby’s. Among these two men which Annie is prying on,  Ebby is the one who is much willing to accept Anie’s offer.  While on the other hand, Crash, a philosophical being, declined the ‘game’ as he is thinking about his end nearing baseball career. Despite Crash’s disapproval of Annie’s offer, they still work together for Nuke’s career (Ebby’s nickname given by Annie) to make him a great pitcher. After a long journey of Anne and Nuke being together, they finally end. Nuke continues his soaring career while Crash overcomes his jealousy and manages to move into another team.

Famous quotes:

Crash Davis: This son of a bitch is throwing a two-hit shutout. He’s shaking me off. You believe that shit? Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

Annie Savoy: The world is made for people who aren’t cursed with self awareness.

Skip: You guys. You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!

Larry: Lollygaggers!

Skip: Lollygaggers.

Annie Savoy: These are the ground rules. I hook up with one guy a season. Usually takes me a couple weeks to pick the guy – kinda my own spring training. And, well, you two are the most promising prospects of the season so far, so I just thought we should kinda get to know each other.

Crash Davis: Time out. Why do you get to choose?

Annie Savoy: What?

Crash Davis: Why do you get to choose? I mean, why don’t I get to choose, why doesn’t he get to choose?

Annie Savoy: Well, actually, nobody on this planet ever really chooses each other. I mean, it’s all a question of quantum physics, molecular attraction, and timing. Why, there are laws we don’t understand that bring us together and tear us apart. Uh, it’s like pheromones. You get three ants together, they can’t do dick. You get 300 million of them, they can build a cathedral.

[Crash laughs]

Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: So is somebody going to go to bed with somebody or what?

Annie Savoy: Honey, you are a regular nuclear meltdown. You better cool off. Ha ha, ha ha!

[to Crash as he stands up]

Annie Savoy: Oh, where are you going?

Crash Davis: After 12 years in the minor leagues, I don’t try out. Besides, uh, I don’t believe in quantum physics when it comes to matters of the heart.

Annie Savoy: What do you believe in, then?

Crash Davis: Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

[pauses then winks and walks away]

Crash Davis: Goodnight.

Annie Savoy: Oh my. Crash…

Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Hey, Annie, what’s all this molecule stuff?

[first lines]

Annie Savoy: [narrating] I believe in the Church of Baseball. I’ve tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn’t work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there’s no guilt in baseball, and it’s never boring,

[giggles]

Annie Savoy: which makes it like sex. There’s never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn’t have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball: you just gotta relax and concentrate. Besides, I’d never sleep with a player hitting under .250, not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle. You see, there’s a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I got a ballplayer alone, I’ll just read Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman to him, and the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. ‘Course, a guy’ll listen to anything if he thinks it’s foreplay. I make them feel confident, and they make me feel safe, and pretty. ‘Course, what I give them lasts a lifetime; what they give me lasts 142 games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball – now who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for God’s sake? It’s a long season and you gotta trust it. I’ve tried ’em all, I really have, and the only church that truly feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the Church of Baseball.

Fun Fact about Bull Durham

  • Ron Shelton was a former minor league baseball player and used his experience as the basis for the story.

A golden boy from a war who successfully made multiple German soldiers surrender in The Great war. Carter also has a dashing look and great speed on the field. This new member was a good catch that even a cub journalist, Lexie Littleton, wants to prove that something is wrong about this almost good-to-be-true player. Lexie keeps on finding faults in Carter’s past war experience. Meanwhile, Dodge’s attempt to legitimize pro football to start to get back on track. And with his career near an end, Dodge gets to play one last game. This time it is against Carter, who is now under the Chicago team.

Famous quotes:

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: [as they prepare to fight] I just want to say, stay away from my right knee.

Carter Rutherford: Watch my left shoulder.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: I will. Also, my right hindquarter. Behind my right thigh, but really, the *whole* hindquarter.

Carter Rutherford: Well, you wouldn’t punch me in the back, would you? Because I got a bad back.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: No, never. Let’s just go for the face.

Carter Rutherford: Me too, just hit me in the face.

Carter Rutherford: [Wants to fight Dodge over Lexie] Okay, we can do this right here, or we can go outside.

Lexie Littleton: Get him, Dodge!

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: We got a game in five days.

Lexie Littleton: What?

Carter Rutherford: What, you think you’re gonna hurt me?

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: I might.

Lexie Littleton: Did you hear what he just called me?

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: He’s a little drunk.

Carter Rutherford: [Scoffs] I’m not drunk, you coward!

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: Really? Cause your sleeve’s on fire.

Carter Rutherford: Wait. Where were you two?

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: Out.

Lexie Littleton: Nowhere.

Carter Rutherford: Did you *kiss* her?

Lexie Littleton: Now wait a minute.

Carter Rutherford: I want answers!

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: Yeah, I kissed her! On the mouth, twice! And I liked it. A lot!

Carter Rutherford: Oh you did, did you?

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: Yeah!

Lexie Littleton: Thanks.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: You’re welcome.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: You’re the kind of cocktail that comes on like sugar but gives you a kick in the head. The only thing you hate worse than a guy making a play is when a guy *doesn’t* make a play.

Lexie Littleton: Oh, were you making a play? I hadn’t realized. It might work on my Aunt Lurleen. She’s a little near-sighted.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: [about his “Ladies Home Journal”] You know, there’s an article on peach canning in here that I’m dying to get back to.

Lexie Littleton: Well I know you, too, Dodge Connelly. You think you’re the slickest operator in Duluth, and maybe you are, but being the slickest operator in Duluth is kinda like being the world’s tallest midget, if you ask me.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: It’s too bad we know each other so well. We might have gotten along.

Lexie Littleton: Well, I’ll live.

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: Alone!

Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly: You’re only as young as the woman you feel.

Ben: Yes. Look we get a dehumidifier in here we can actually save most of this wood. Just say the word.

David Barrow: Great. Well, yes, we want you to start as soon as possible.

Ben: All right.

Dana Barrow: No, uh, what I would like is for Mr. Philips to come back here when it hasn’t been raining for a few days, and the two of us can get upon that roof and see what’s what. That way once the situation’s been thoroughly and properly assessed, then we can talk about hours and materials and the scope of work in a manner that’s not been pulled directly out of our asses. And what I’d also like is to agree on a deadline which if not met, means revisiting the terms of the contract with the probability of penalties paid to us by you for each day of work exceeding the original agreement. Now if that all sounds acceptable, I’ll be happy to resume this conversation at a later date. But, in the meantime it was a pleasure meeting you Mr. Philips and uhm, my husband, David, will show you out. David if you wouldn’t mind.
