Main Plot: In an average year, there are over 20,000 wildfires; we follow crews to a few. Before the trees become flammable, the underbrush is burned during the preseason physical preparation and prescribed burn. We see how fire spotters identify lighting-caused fires that smokejumpers must then jump into because these burns can’t do the entire job. The task is fairly easy in Idaho’s wide-open wilderness. Access to the fire is simpler but putting it out is more difficult in California because the chaparral forests are more flammable and closer to civilization. Additionally, the acrid smoke in Australia’s eucalyptus- and tea-filled forests adds to the fire risk.
