You have no right to make people crazy! You think I investigate every Walter Cronkite story there is? Huh? If this is just nerve gas, how come I know everything in such detail? I’ve never been here before. How come I know so much? What the hell is going on around here? Who the hell are you people?

One of these notorious robbers was John Dillinger together with his members, who they targeted were the rich people with big businesses and leaving alone the ordinary ones. While Dillinger acts like a hero, FBI head J. Edger Hoover is determined to stop his actions and teach him a great lesson. Hoover then assigned his good agent Melvin Purvis to catch and put Dillinger behind bars. As Purvis struggles with the manhunt, Dilinger faces the hardship of losing his friends and the never-ending change in his own world, and he thinks that he is slowly losing his place.

Famous quotes:

John Dillinger: I was raised on a farm in Moooresville, Indiana. My mama died when I was three, my daddy beat the hell out of me cause he didn’t know no better way to raise me. I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you… what else you need to know?

Billie Frechette: They’re looking at me because they’re not used to having a girl in their restaurant in a $3 dress.

John Dillinger: Listen, doll. That’s ’cause they’re all about where people come from. The only thing that’s important is where someone’s going.

Billie Frechette: [smiles] Where are you going?

John Dillinger: Anywhere I want.

John Dillinger: We’re having too good a time today. We ain’t thinking about tomorrow.

[last lines]

Billie Frechette: They say you’re the man who shot him.

Charles Winstead: That’s right. One of ’em.

Billie Frechette: So why are you coming here to see me? To see the damage you done?

Charles Winstead: No. I came here because he asked me to. When he went down, he said somethin’. I put my ear next to his mouth, and what I think he said was this. He said, ‘Tell Billie for me: Bye bye, Blackbird.’

[Billie starts to cry as Winstead gets up to leave]

Melvin Purvis: What keeps you up nights, Mr. Dillinger?

John Dillinger: Coffee.

Fun Fact about Public Enemies

  • Although Billie Frechette was never given a “third-degree” interrogation by the FBI, as shown in the movie, the FBI agents did perform similar tactics on Helen Nelson (the wife of Baby Face Nelson), Alvin Karpis, and a John Dillinger associate in Chicago named James Probasco. In the instance of Probasco, he ended up falling to his death from an upper-floor window. Officially, it is believed he committed suicide to avoid further interrogation. However, some historians believe that the FBI agents interrogating Probasco attempted to make him talk by hanging him out of a window and that they lost their grip on him.

Edie Stall: My husband does not know you. He wouldn’t know you, somebody like you.

Carl Fogarty: Oh, he knows Carl Fogarty, all right. He knows me intimately. See?

[Mr. Fogarty points to his blind left eye]

Carl Fogarty: This isn’t a completely dead eye. It still works a bit. The problem is, the only thing I can see with it is Joey Cusack. And it can see right through him. Right through your husband, Edie. I see what’s inside him, what makes him tick. He’s still the same guy.

Edie Stall: No.

Carl Fogarty: He’s still crazy fuckin’ Joey. And you know it, don’t you?

[Richie tells Joey about the first day Joey came home as a baby]

Richie Cusack: You always were a problem for me, Joey. When mom brought you home from the hospital, I tried to strangle you in your crib. I guess all kids try to do that. She caught me, whacked the daylights out of me.

Tom Stall: I’ve heard that story.

Richie Cusack: Well, what do you think? Better late than never?

Tom Stall: Richie… I’m here to make peace. Tell me what I got to do to make things right.

Richie Cusack: You could do something, I guess.

Richie Cusack: [Richie pauses as Ruben reaches into his sleeve behind Joey] You could die, Joey.

[Tom argues with Jack about their way of solving problems]

Tom Stall: In this family, we do not solve our problems by hitting people!

Jack Stall: No, in this family, we shoot them!

[as Tom slaps Jack across the face]

Fun Fact about A History of Violence

  • During an interview, Viggo Mortensen stated that during the shooting of the first bar scene with Ed Harris, he could not stop laughing, and as a result, the scene had to be re-shot several times. Due to Viggo Mortensen’s behavior, Ed Harris completed the scene without pants; he only wore his underwear, yet this cannot be seen as the bar table impedes our view. Thus, Viggo Mortensen had to act seriously while Ed Harris was not wearing pants, which is the scene used in the movie.

Rudy Ruettiger grew up in a Catholic family and loved Notre Dame football. He does not have the grades, the height, or the ability to get into his dream school, so he follows his father and brothers and works at the steel plant. When his twenty-second birthday comes, his best friend Pete dies because of a tragic accident. Pete is the only one who believes in him. Rudy then realizes it is the perfect time to pursue his great dream- to play for the Fighting Irish. Despite the fear of him being a failure to his father and girlfriend, he still left to follow his plan. More than being able to go to a university is required. With a priest’s help and encouragement, he enrolls in Holy Cross Junior College. There he gets help to learn how to read properly and finally gets a good grade. He also works on the maintenance crew. The day came, and he finally got accepted upon transferring to another school. He got the chance to be part of the team for two years and was called a “tackling dummy.” Being persistent, Rudy inspires his team, and they finally make them dress as one of their teammates and play with them triumphantly.

Famous quotes:

Pete: Well, you know what my dad always said, Having dreams is what makes life tolerable.

Fortune: You’re 5 foot nothin’, 100 and nothin’, and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for 2 years. And you’re gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don’t have to prove nothin’ to nobody but yourself. And after what you’ve gone through, if you haven’t done that by now, it ain’t gonna never happen. Now go on back.

Father Cavanaugh: [in church] Taking your appeal to a higher authority?

Rudy: I’m desperate. If I don’t get in next semester, it’s over. Notre Dame doesn’t accept senior transfers.

Father Cavanaugh: Well, you’ve done a hell of a job kid, chasing down your dream.

Rudy: Who cares what kind of job I did if it doesn’t produce results? It doesn’t mean anything.

Father Cavanaugh: I think you’ll find that it will.

Rudy: Maybe I haven’t prayed enough.

Father Cavanaugh: I don’t think that’s the problem. Praying is something we do in our time, the answers come in God’s time.

Rudy: If I’ve done everything I possibly can, can you help me?

Father Cavanaugh: Son, in thirty-five years of religious study, I’ve come up with only two hard, incontrovertible facts; there is a God, and, I’m not Him.

Rudy: We’re gonna go inside, we’re gonna go outside, inside and outside. We’re gonna get ’em on the run boys and once we get ’em on the run we’re gonna keep ’em on the run. And then we’re gonna go go go go go go and we’re not gonna stop til we get across that goalline. This is a team they say is… is good, well I think we’re better than them. They can’t lick us, so what do you say men?

Rudy: Coach I just wanted to thank you for letting be a part of this football program this year.

Ara Parseghian: Rudy, I never I thought I’d be saying this but it’s been an honor.

Rudy: But I’ve come to realize that God made some people out to be football players and that I’m not one of them.

Ara Parseghian: I wish God would put your heart in some of my players bodies.

Rudy: [laughs] Yea, I have this wish to let my father watch one of his sons play football for the Irish and I was wondering if I could possibly dress for one game next season?

Ara Parseghian: Rudy the NCAA is really strict with this 60 player rule, and in some positions we only have one backup and you know that every year we are competing for the national championship. Is this wish just for your father?

Rudy: No its for everyone who told me that being a Norte Dame Football player would be impossible. My brothers, the guys I work with at the mill they can’t come to practice and see that I am a part of this team.

Ara Parseghian: [sighs] OK.

Rudy: OK?

Ara Parseghian: You deserve it. You will dress for one game next season.

Rudy: [can barely hold in his excitement] Thank You Coach!

Fun Fact about Rudy

  • In the movie, Rudy is portrayed as having largely gone into the steel industry after graduating high school. In reality, he served four years in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman on a communications ship, which is never mentioned.

Ralphie: Ohhhh fuuudge!

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] Only I didn’t say “Fudge.” I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the “F-dash-dash-dash” word!

The Old Man: [stunned] What did you say?

Ralphie: Uh, um…

The Old Man: That’s… what I thought you said. Get in the car… Go on.

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] It was all over – I was dead. What would it be? The guillotine? Hanging? The chair? The rack? The Chinese water torture? Hmmph. Mere child’s play compared to what surely awaited me.

[last lines]

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pranging ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

Mother: Are you ready to tell me?

[Ralphie mumbles yes]

Mother: Alright, where did you hear that word?

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master. But, I chickened out and said the first name that came to mind.

Ralphie: Schwartz!

Mother: Oh, I see.

[Puts soap back in Ralphie’s mouth]

Ralphie: [Ralphie mumbles and scream]

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] Some men are Baptists, others Catholics; my father was an Oldsmobile man.

The Old Man: That son of a bitch would freeze up in the middle of summer on the equator!

Mother: Little pitchers!

The Old Man: Thanks… hold it!

[the furnace conks out]

The Old Man: It’s a clinker! That blasted stupid furnace dadgummit!

[he walks down a few stairs and falls the rest of the way down]

The Old Man: Damn skates!

[coughing]

The Old Man: Oh, for cripes sake, open up the damper will ya? Who the hell turned it all the way down? AGAIN! Oh, blast it! Poop flirt, rattle crap, camel flirt! You blunder frattle beak struckle brat! Of a womp sack butt bottom fodder…

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] In the heat of battle my father wove a tapestry of obscenities that as far as we know is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan.

The Old Man: …smick melly whop walker! Drop dumb fratten housestickle viper!

Ralphie as an Adult: [narrating] Over the years I got to be quite a connoisseur of soap. My personal preference was for Lux, but I found Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor – heady, but with just a touch of mellow smoothness. Lifebuoy, on the other hand…

Ralphie: YECCHH!

Still, unfortunately, she’s already dating Rod, one of the famous men on campus. Beyond his attraction to Katherine, Dave’s goal is to race with his idols.

Famous quotes:

Dad: What is this?

Mom: It’s sauteed zucchini.

Dad: It’s I-ty food. I don’t want no I-ty food.

Mom: It’s not. I got it at the A&P. It’s like… squash.

Dad: I know I-ty food when I hear it! It’s all them “eenie” foods… zucchini… and linguine… and fettuccine. I want some American food, dammit! I want French Fries!

Mom: [to the cat] Oh, get off the table, Fellini!

Dad: Hey, that’s *my* cat! His name’s Jake, not Fellini! I won’t have any “eenie” in this house!

[to the cat]

Dad: Your name’s Jake, you understand?

Dad: He’s never tired. He’s never miserable.

Mom: He’s young.

Dad: When I was young I was tired and miserable.

Dad: No, I don’t feel lucky to be alive! I feel lucky I’m not dead. There’s a difference.

Dad: I was proud of my work. And the buildings went up. When they were finished the damnedest thing happened. It was like the buildings were too good for us. Nobody told us that. It just felt uncomfortable, that’s all.

Dave: Buon giorno, papa!

Dad: I’m not “papa.” I’m your god-damned father.

Fun Fact about Breaking Away

The production team decided to call the Bloomington townies “cutters” because they felt the actual local nickname (“stoners” or “stonies”) would draw a parallel to drug references for viewers who were not raised in the area.

Filming Locations: Madison, Indiana, USA; Marengo, Indiana, USA; Marengo Cave, Marengo, Indiana, USA; Columbus, Indiana, USA; Castaic Lake, Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, California, USA

Main Plot: Madison is a movie released in the year 2001. The Ohio river port is in full economic crisis. Its last pride was a unique town-owned power boat, although the n long wait for the donation of a millionaire a long time ago has never happened. Madison was once an occupied port upstream of New Orleans. Mike’s father is still on the job but will not be working for long if the economy keeps growing. Madison once had a good history when it came to boats. Hydroplaning was like religion in Madison, and it owned the competitive hydroplane. Miss Madison wears all the other ships owned or sponsored. But despite all this, Mike has an inferiority complex compared to the other children who traveled the race circuit, as Madison was seen as an unsophisticated backwater that did not deserve to host the Gold Cup.

Famous quotes:

Mike McCormick: Can you fish out of this boat.

Harry Volpi: Caught more fish than John the Baptist?

Mike McCormick: Who’s John the Baptist?

Harry Volpi: Something tells me this kid spends a little too much time at the boat garage.

Tony Steinhardt: [upon seeing nitrous oxide kit] Does anybody recognize anything?

Travis: Where are the directions?

Mike McCormick: This stuff looks like scuba gear.

Jim McCormick: It’s just engine equipment.

Bobby Humphrey: This is crazy, Harry Volpi has blown up more boats than the U.S. Navy.

[first lines]

Adult Mike McCormick: [narrating] Why is it that everything important that happens to you when you’re a kid, happens during the summer? In the summer of 1971 I was ten years old, and the only thing I looked forward to more than the last day of school, was the first day of practice of the hydroplane racing season. You could say Madison kids were born into racing, the same way some folks were born into the oil business or farming.

Jim McCormick: Is Mike asleep?

Bonnie McCormick: Mm hmm, finally. Wanted to know what his first word was.

Jim McCormick: What was it, “Nixon?”

Bonnie McCormick: Close. It was “Daddy.”

Bonnie McCormick: You be good, alright?

Mike McCormick: [with mock fatigue] No gambling, no whiskey, and no women…
