Main Plot: An older man recounts his 60th birthday, a trip from rural Mississippi to Memphis, and horse racing. Thanks to Lucius’ grandfather, a bright yellow Winton Flyer is the first vehicle in the area. The plantation handyman, Boon Hogganbeck, decides to steal the car while he’s away and takes Lucius with him. Ned, a mulatto who appears to be Lucius’ cousin, is concealed. The trio travels to Memphis, where Ned trades in the car for a racehorse. A brothel is where Boon’s girlfriend works. Lucius learns about adulthood, including its opportunities for bravery and decency and its prejudice and immorality. Do crooks, criminals, and rapscallions have a chance to change their ways?
