Main Plot: Arrival is a movie released in the year 2016 that talks about aliens and their arrival on Earth. Aliens have landed on Earth in twelve different locations. Louise Banks, a language professor, joins the US army in one of the locations the aliens landed, Montana. Her job was to learn and understand the language of an alien and try to communicate with them. With the series of meet-ups with the aliens, she compiled a record of the alien’s “language,” a series of drawn symbols. And the thing that they need to know is if these aliens were good or bad. Other nations where aliens landed also started to think that aliens were a threat and time was running out because aliens have different means of communication to convey information.

Famous quotes:

Louise Banks: Despite knowing the journey… and where it leads… I embrace it… and I welcome every moment of it.

Louise Banks: If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?

Ian Donnelly: Maybe I’d say what I felt more often. I-I don’t know.

Louise Banks: But now I’m not so sure I believe in beginnings and endings. There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived.

Ian Donnelly: [reading from a book by Louise Banks] “Language is the foundation of civilization. It is the glue that holds a people together. It is the first weapon drawn in a conflict.”

Ian Donnelly: You know I’ve had my head tilted up to the stars for as long as I can remember. You know what surprised me the most? It wasn’t meeting them. It was meeting you.

Fun Fact about Arrival (II):

  • Director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer created a fully functioning, visual, alien language. Heisserer, Villeneuve, and their teams managed to create a “logogram bible,” which included over a hundred different completely operative logograms, seventy-one of which are actually featured in the movie.

Lieutenant Commander Data: Captain, I believe I am feeling… anxiety. It is an intriguing sensation. A most distracting…

Famous quotes:

Tom Booker: There was a boy from the Blackfeet reservation, he used to do some work around here for a while. Sixteen, strong kid, good kid. He and I were really, really good friends. One day he went swimming and dove headfirst into the lake… and right into a rock. And it snapped his neck, paralyzed him. And after the accident I’d look in on him from time to time. But he wasn’t there. It was like his mind, his spirit, whatever you want to call it, just disappeared. The only thing left was just anger. Just sort of as if the… the boy I once knew just went somewhere else.

Grace: I know where he goes.

Tom Booker: I know you do. Don’t you disappear. You do whatever you have to do to hold on.

Grace: Are you afraid of anything, Tom Booker?

Tom Booker: Of growing old. Being of no use.

Tom Booker: I didn’t know that it was right to love her. I just loved her.

Annie: I’ve never been on a cow farm before. It seems to me that the bulls have the best time. Just laying around the fields waiting for someone to come along and ask them to do their work.

Tom Booker: You get born a bull you have a 90% chance of being castrated. Served up as hamburger. So on balance, I reckon I’d choose bein’ a cow.

Tom Booker: Knowing is the easy part; saying it out loud is the hard part.

Director: Edward Zwick

Main Cast: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn, Julia Ormond, Henry Thomas, Karina Lombard, Tantoo Cardinal, Gordon Tootoosis, Paul Desmond, Christina Pickles, Robert Wisden, John Novak, Kenneth Welsh, Bill Dow, Sam Sarkar, Nigel Bennett, Keegan MacIntosh, Eric Johnson

Release Date: 13 January 1995

Filming Locations: Ghost River, Alberta, Canada; Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Morley, Alberta, Canada; Alberta, Canada; Gastown, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Main Plot: Legends of the Fall is all about the life of a father and his three children and how they face different kinds of challenges in life. In the early 1900s, living with his three sons, Tristan,  Alfred, and Samuel, Colonel William Ludlow decides to live in a wild place in Montana to start a new life away from the government and society that he hates. The three brothers seemed to grow mature and formed a solid bond, not until Susannah came into their lives. It all started when the youngest, Samuel, came back from school and brought home his fiancé Susannah. Alfred, the eldest, then starts to have a feeling for Susannah, but then he discovers more. Susannah and Tristan also started to form an unusual bond. Tristan was his father’s favorite, wild son like the mountains. The brothers then started to fight against each other, and their solid bond will put to the test.

Famous quotes:

Alfred: I followed all of the rules, man’s and God’s. And you, you followed none of them. And they all loved you more. Samuel, Father, and my… even my own wife.

[First lines]

One Stab: Some people hear their own inner voices with great clearness and they live by what they hear. Such people become crazy, or they become legends.

One Stab: Every warrior hopes a good death will find him.

One Stab: I thought Tristan would never live to be an old man. I was wrong about that. I was wrong about many things. It was those who loved him most who died young. He was a rock they broke themselves against however much he tried to protect them.

Colonel Ludlow: Indians! Indians were the issue in those days. I can assure you, gentlemen, there is nothing quite so grotesque as the meeting of a child with a bullet; or an entire village slaughtered while sleeping. That was the Government’s resolution of that particular issue and I have seen nothing in its behavior since then that would persuade me that it has gained either in wisdom, common sense, or humanity.

Fun Fact about Legends of the Fall:

  • Calgary was chosen as the main filming location because of its dry weather. Once production started, they were met with record rains.

Release Date: 15 August 2003

Filming Locations: Stoney Indian Reservation, Alberta, Canada; Longview, Alberta, Canada; Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Morley, Alberta, Canada

Main Plot: Open Range is a 2003 movie about a group of friends who manage castles. Boss Spearman, Charley Waite, Mose Harrison, and Button free graze their cattle across the wide grassland of the West, sharing a friendship forged by a devoted code of honor and living a life without a barrier of civilization. When their rebellious shepherd forces them near the small town of Hamonville, they then encounter the corrupt sheriff Poole and kingpin rancher Denton Baxter who run the place through fear, tyranny, and violence. Boss and Charley find themselves drawn towards an unavoidable situation as they are forced to defend their freedom and values that may take away easily. In the middle of this disruption, the loner Charley finds himself a lover, Sue Barlow, a beautiful woman who embraces both his heart and soul.

Famous quotes:

Mack: Shame what this town’s come to.

Charley Waite: You could do something about it.

Mack: What? We’re freighters. Ralph here’s a shopkeeper.

Charley Waite: You’re men, ain’t you?

Mack: I didn’t raise my boys just to see ’em killed.

Charley Waite: Well you may not know this, but there’s things that gnaw at a man worse than dying.

Sue Barlow: I don’t have the answers, Charley. But I know that people get confused in this life about what they want, and what they’ve done, and what they think they should’ve because of it. Everything they think they are or did, takes hold so hard that it won’t let them see what they can be.

[Charley Waite kicks Button off his horse. He falls into the river]

Button: What you do that for?

Charley Waite: Cheatin’ at cards.

Button: I apologized to you for that.

[to Boss Spearman]

Button: Eh, Boss? I apologized to him for that.

Boss Spearman: Evidently he ain’t over it yet.

Charley Waite: [burying Mose and Tig] Be right to say some words.

Boss Spearman: You want to speak with the man upstairs, go on and do it. I’ll stand right here and listen, hat in hand, but I ain’t talking to that son or a bitch. And I’ll be holding a grudge for him letting this befall a sweet kid like Mose.

Charley Waite: Well, he sure as hell wasn’t one to complain. Woke with a smile, seemed like he could keep it there all day. Kind of a man that’d say ‘good morning’ and mean it, whether it was or not. Tell you the truth, Lord, if there was two gentler souls in this world, I never seen ’em. Seems like old Tig wouldn’t even kill birds in the end. Well, you got yourself a good man and a good dog, and I’m inclined to agree with Boss here about holding a grudge against you for it. I guess that means Amen.

Boss Spearman: It’s a shame to go forever without takin’ a taste of somethin’.

Sequel: Open Range 2

A colonel then recruited him to help him find a way to prevent the US president’s assassination in one of the three cities he would visit in the next two weeks. He does his work, but the shot is fired without prevention, and he’s the victim. Wounded and hunted by thousands, he goes to hide and finds two allies, searching for the truth and those who double-crossed him. All this puts him back in Ethiopia.

Famous quotes:

Bob Lee Swagger: I don’t think you understand. These boys killed my dog.

Mr. Rate: Would’ve been a bad job to take, though.

Nick Memphis: How come?

Mr. Rate: Whoever took that shot’s probably dead now. That’s how conspiracy works. Them boys on the grassy knoll, they were dead within three hours. Buried in the damn desert. Unmarked graves out past Terlingua.

Nick Memphis: And you know this for a fact?

Mr. Rate: Still got the shovel!

[last lines]

Senator Charles F. Meachum: Are you out of your mind? Are you out of your damn mind? I am a United States Senator!

Bob Lee Swagger: Exactly.

Colonel Isaac Johnson: What the hell am I doing here? You’ve got nothing on me. I’m covered. Call the Joint Chief.

Attorney General Russert: That won’t be necessary, Colonel, as I have already received no less than a dozen calls from highly-ranked and powerfully-placed individuals telling me to let you go, but the joy of checks and balances in our government is that I can, and am, indeed, required by law, to tell them to fuck off.

Bob Lee Swagger: Suppose I was looking for man who could make a 2200 yard cold bore shot. Who’s alive that could do that?

Mr. Rate: Seems I heard about a shot like that being made not too long ago, said the guy’s name was Bob Lee Swagger. Never met the man, so I wouldn’t know him.

Bob Lee Swagger: Ya, they said that all right.

Mr. Rate: They also said that artificial sweeteners were safe, WMDs were in Iraq, and Anna Nicole married for love.

Sequel: Shooter II

Fun Fact about Shooter (I)

  • According to the movie’s script, doctors William Goldman, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, and Harrison Ford passed on the movie. These men would have fit the literary Bob Lee Swagger’s age a bit more closely than Mark Wahlberg (born in 1971). Author Stephen Hunter introduced Swagger as a Vietnam veteran in a 1993 novel taking place in 1992; however, to accommodate Wahlberg’s age, this film has Swagger active in Africa in the 1990s instead of Vietnam in the 1970s.

A River Runs Through It – US Box Office: USD 43.44 million

Director: Robert Redford

Release Date: 30 October 1992

Filming Locations: Granite Falls, Wyoming, USA; Livingston, Montana, USA; Redeemer Lutheran Church, Livingston, Montana, USA; Bozeman, Montana, USA

Main Plot: A River Runs Through is a cinematographically stunning true story of Norman Maclean and his brother Paul. The Maclean brothers, Paul and Norman, live a simple life in an untouched place in rural Montana, spending more of their time fly fishing. Their father was a strict minister who they wanted to escape most of the time. The boys eventually parted ways when Norman moved east to attend college. When Norman finished his study, he returned to their hometown as a professor, and his brother Paul was a rebellious journalist and engaged in gambling and liquor. Their morning was spent in school and religious study, while in the afternoon, they were in the river doing fly fishing.

Famous quotes:

Rev. Maclean: Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true, we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don’t know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them – we can love completely without complete understanding.

[last lines]

Older Norman: [narrating] Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.

Norman Maclean: Dear Jesse, as the moon lingers a moment over the bitterroots, before its descent into the invisible, my mind is filled with song. I find I am humming softly; not to the music, but something else; some place else; a place remembered; a field of grass where no one seemed to have been; except a deer; and the memory is strengthened by the feeling of you, dancing in my awkward arms.

Older Norman: [narrating] As time passed, my father struggled for more to hold on to, asking me again and again: had I told him everything. And finally I said to him, “maybe all I know about Paul is that he was a fine fisherman.” “You know more than that,” my father said, “he was beautiful.” And that was the last time we spoke of my brother’s death.

Older Norman: [narrating] My father was very sure about certain matters pertaining to the universe. To him, all good things – trout as well as eternal salvation – came by grace; and grace comes by art; and art does not come easy.
