Introducing Options Veterinary Care
I am Bonney Brown the board president of Options Veterinary Care a non-profit clinic.
How Did Options Veterinary Care Started? What Are The Challenges Encountered Along The Way?
I was a Life-long time animal lover and animal welfare professional. We can always use donations to provide veterinary care to pets who would otherwise suffer without it. The need is great. We receive an average of over 200 calls per help each weekday. The need is tremendous and for the past couple of years, there has been a nationwide shortage of veterinarians and skilled veterinary support staff. We are always looking for dedicated people to join the team.
Programs And Services That Options Veterinary Care Offers
We provide veterinary care to pets who would otherwise suffer without it. We are the only nonprofit clinic of our kind in Northern Nevada. 70% of the clients are senior citizens. We also assist people who work in low-wage jobs, have experienced severe financial hardship, people who are homeless, disabled, or otherwise truly cannot afford needed veterinary care for a pet in need. This service enables people to keep their pets rather than surrender them to animal shelters if they cannot afford needed care. No pet should suffer for financial reasons. The clinic is made possible by donations from the public, local businesses, and grants.
Nicole’s husband unexpectedly passed away, leaving her a widow with four young children. A few days later the family’s beloved dog Scooby, a small terrier, accidentally escaped and was hit by a car. Nicole rushed Scooby to the nearest emergency clinic. The estimated cost for treatment was over $6,000, way beyond what she could afford. Yet, she could not bear the idea of euthanizing him. Nicole heard about Options and reached out for help. Upon Scooby’s arrival at Options, Dr. Jeannie stabilized him and assessed his injuries — multiple fractured ribs, a fractured pelvis, an injured hindleg, and abrasions —and provided the treatment Scooby needed. With care and time, Scooby made a strong recovery at an affordable cost for his family.
What Are The Help Needed From The Local Community?
We have opportunities for volunteers and donations of any size to help animals. No donation is too small to help make a difference. We are also often in need of supplies that people can donate. You can visit the website to learn more: www.optionsveterinarycare.org
How do you ensure the well-being of animals in your care? What veterinary care, nutrition, and efforts are made to prioritize their mental and emotional health?
The clinic is staffed by licensed veterinarians and other professional veterinary support staff. We help local rescue groups by providing discounted veterinary care, but primarily we help seniors living on a limited income and other low-income individuals to provide affordable veterinary care to dogs and cats they love. We also offer a pet food pantry to help people who need pet food.
Working With The Local Community
Yes, we work with the SPCA of Northern Nevada, Washoe County Regional Animal Services, other local rescue, and TNR groups as well as many human services agencies, both nonprofit and governmental.
What Are The Help Needed From The Local Community?
We would love to get a larger facility or second location to serve more animals in need. If anyone would like to help, we would be delighted to hear from them.
