Papillon, a blue-eyed man with a large butterfly tattoo, decides to befriend Dega and promises to protect him. As the ship travels south, some men appear ill and weak due to the heat. Papillon has a tanned, fit, and confident appearance. During the night, two men attempt to assault Dega. Papillon manages to fight them off but is imprisoned.
