Aldabra

A remote island that will surely capture your heart! This remote four-island atoll is on par with the Galapagos as a global biodiversity hotspot.  It is home to red-footed boobies, frigatebirds, the Aldabra drongo, the once thought-to-be-extinct giant banded snail, and, most importantly, the largest population of giant tortoises in the world.  There are no airports, harbors, helipads, hotels, or guesthouses in or around Aldabra, so getting there is a logistical challenge.  However, it’s well worth the effort! The hike can be completed in around one and a half hours. At the summit, which is 500 meters above sea level, there is a vast area of granite that provides spectacular views of the nation’s capital, Victoria, as well as the surrounding islands, including Praslin, La Digue, and the man-made resort island of Eden. The Morne Seychellois National Park encompasses twenty percent of the island of Mahé and is home to a number of rare species, including the elusive Seychelles Scops-owl.  The park also features hiking trails throughout its grounds. On the island of Mahe, which is the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, you’ll find Seychelles’ namesake mountain, the Morne Seychellois. Still, the easiest-drinking coconut rum and the amber-colored eight-year-old St. André matured in American oak barrels are by far the best of the bunch.
