The city’s first congregational mosque was constructed on the site of two smaller Ghaznavid mosques destroyed by earthquake and fire.
The mosque’s numerous restorations and repair operations leave little to confirm as genuine. Twentieth-century plans, most notably the 1945 program detailed by Richard Frye, have increased the length of the northeastern section of the mosque from 101 meters to 121 meters.
Tiles and carved stone were used to renovate the outside, and sections of the courtyard arcade were glazed. During the restorations, the reflecting pool in the courtyard’s center and the lone tree in its northwest corner were also removed.

Khwaja Abd Allah Ansari Shrine was built in the 15th century. It is where the tomb of a well-known Sufi mystic and saint was kept.
