A thousand and one containers and a library full of secrets treasured by Bourg-en-Bresse!

After moving to its current location around the tail end of the 18th century, the apothecary operated at this location until 1963, when it finally shut its doors for good.

Today, the property is managed by the Tourist Office at the meetings that are reported on.

This exhibit features 18th-century medicines, herbal teas, demonstrations on preparing food using traditional recipes, and a tour by candlelight.

After passing a historic cloister that has been meticulously preserved in its design, you will find yourself behind the scenes.

The shine of the stills and the other implements is immediately seen when the wooden door is propped slightly ajar.

The nuns made the preparations in this facility. Using an old-fashioned press, oils, liquids, and syrups were pressed onto the marble stone.

The learning room is in the back. The bookshelves are stocked with leather-bound volumes with gold-tinted covers.

If you look through science, cooking, and other encyclopedias from the 17th to the 19th century, you can learn a lot about the history of knowledge.

Take a short walk from the city center to Bourg-en-Bresse’s old hospital and have a first-hand experience with the art of healing in the past.

Abbey of Cluny (Abbaye de Cluny)

Abbey of Cluny

Admire artistic treasures as you stroll beneath the cathedral’s high Romanesque vaults.

The Cluny Abbey, founded in 910, profoundly impacted Europe’s political, cultural, and religious landscapes.

Although Cluny is both an abbey and a town, it demonstrates the ingenuity of reforming the monastic order prevalent during the Middle Ages.

Cluny’s majestic monastery was destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War.

An old Benedictine monastery built in Romanesque style, the Abbey of Cluny is the seat of the Western world’s most important medieval monastic order.

Cluny’s spiritual and temporal authority allowed it to initiate significant undertakings like the reformation of Spain, organizing large pilgrims, and interfering in the arts during its heyday.

The abbey had a significant effect on the arts, particularly painting, music, and architecture, all in service of an unrivaled liturgy.

The style that was developed at Cluny spread throughout Europe and was characterized by towering navels with barrel-vaulted ceilings, elevations on its three floors, and historiated capitals.

The year 1130 marked the beginning of Cluny III’s reign.

Attributed to the reason that the church has five naves, an ambulatory choir, and six chapels located all around it, people have been referring to it as the angelic procession ever since the Renaissance.

The harmony of the spaces in this enormous abbey is breathtaking, so be sure to explore it!

Castle of Pennesuyt (Château de Pennesuyt) is one of the best places to go in Bourg-en-Bresse, France

Admire the beauty of this castle that looks like it came straight out of a movie!

In 1378, the seigniory and fortified mansion belonged to Jean de Sancia, whose descendants held it until December 14, 1448, when Jeanne de Sancia married Jean de Lyobard and took ownership of it.

In 1536, Château de Pennesuyt paid his respects to the King of France. Étienne de Rives purchased this property from René de Lyobard, a squire.

Pierre Discoteca, baron de Pardaillan, governor of Bourg, bought it after the death of N. Faure.

Located in the town of Bourg-en-Bresse in the department of Ain, the Château de Pennesuyt or Château de Loze is a historic fortified house from the 14th century that was renovated in the 16th century.

The architecture looks more home in a country manor than in a medieval fortified fortress.

As the only departmental example of a traditional 17th-century house, the castle is architectural and historical.

As of June 9, 1987, the castle has been partially registered as a historical monument.

Chapel des Jésuites is one of the best places to go in Bourg-en-Bresse, France

Who says Churches are the only historical religious places that you can visit?

An excellent example of 17th-century religious architecture, this chapel was once part of the Jesuit institution that is now Lalande High School.

In 1983, it was designated as a historic site by the United States National Park Service.

Because of its symmetry, Baroque altarpieces, carved frieze, and historical exposition, this structure is a significant cultural and historical landmark in the city.

Since 1612, the Jesuits have been a part of Bourg-en-Bresse. After receiving a royal patent in 1649, the institution was founded by Baroness Louise de Monspey, the Baroness of Seyturier and Verjonnière, as a testamentary gift.

St. François-Xavier helping those afflicted” is a tribute to the Jesuit Fathers’ efforts to treat plague victims of the 17th century.

The oil on canvas from the last quarter of the 17th century was listed as a Historic Monument in 1979.

The huge walnut chasuble, which dates back to the 17th century, may be found in the sacristy.

The busy 14th century built building in Bourg-en-Bresse

Bourg-en-Demeure Bresse’s Hugon, also known as the “Maison de bois,” is a mansion on the corner of Gambetta and Victor-Basch streets in the département of Ain.

Built in 1496, this home has been designated a historical landmark since 1940.

One can still see the influence of the region’s 15th-century architecture in this house.

The “colombage” building technique can be clearly seen by raising one’s head.

Although the home is located in a busy commercial area, it has a modest inscription beside its entry indicating its antiquity and status as an official historical monument dating to 1496.

Each of the three timber-framed floors rises above the level below and is supported by a corbel, allowing the bottom level to remain open to the outside world.

If you love old architecture, you will surely love to visit this place.

See by yourself how sturdy it is even though it was built many years ago!

Door of the Jacobins (Porte des Jacobins) is one of the best places to go in Bourg-en-Bresse, France

Pause here for a moment and look at these lovely stretch of timber-framed homes where the city’s medieval drapers and weavers housed their workshops.

This structure represents Bourg-en-Bresse’s historic core.

An arcade known as “Porte des Jacobins” (the Dominicans’ old appellation) was built in 1497, the only one of the three original gates that shut down the fence.

Locals once referred to this spot as “the portal to The Fountain of The Jacobins” since it permitted them to enter the church (the fountain itself has since been removed).

When the convent that once housed the Porte des Jacobins was destroyed in the Revolution, only the elegant pointed arch of the doorway remained.

Visit Rue Jules Migonney, where you’ll find a charming collection of timber-framed cottages that once served as the city’s drapery and weaving industries in medieval times, and take a breather.

Since the 24th of August, 1927, the Porte des Jacobins has been classified as a historical monument.

Every single side of Bourg-en-Bresse is history, and Porte des Jacobins has been a big part of it.

Visit this place, and you will indeed feel the presence of the history of the place because it is well preserved!

Église Notre-Dame (Co-cathedral Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation)

Église Notre-Dame
Église Notre-Dame / Giancarlo Foto4U / Flickr

Admire the religion, history, and miracles like the locals.

Just when the Flamboyant Gothic style was being superseded by Renaissance architecture in the 1500s, this church was built with white stone in the form of a dome.

Founded in 1992, it serves as a cathedral for the Diocese of Belley-Ars.

A co-cathedral is a religious building raised to the rank of the cathedral. At the same time, there is another in the diocese of Saint -Jean-Baptiste de Belley.

Even though there are no side aisles or obvious flying buttresses, these walls that divide each side chapel contribute to the Gothic portion of the building’s sobriety.

It’s safe to say that the lack of an ambulatory and the narrowness of the side chapels on this site are both due to the lack of accessible land near the city wall.

The “Black Virgin” and a panel painted on wood depicting the Virgin and Child in majesty have been revered in the Notre-Dame church for ages, linked to this mythological genesis of its construction.

In this chapel, a miraculous figure of the Virgin found by a shepherd in a willow tree was revered,” wrote the Brossard archivist in his Description de la Ville de Bourg in 1883.

In the sacristy of the Church of Notre Dame, this artwork has been revered for generations and has survived the destruction.

According to legend, the statue of the Black Madonna was crafted from the trunk of a willow on which a “miraculous picture” had been found.

This is a must-visit church with its unique architecture and miraculous history with its paintings and some artifacts.

Old Mcdonald had a farm? No, it’s not his farm, but it is an old farm found in Bourg-en-Bresse.

Beautiful half-timbered and cob farmhouse dating back to 1581 with a stunning gallery with cruciform designs that serve as an upstairs balcony.

Shortly after 1900, the northern section of the city was completely obliterated.

For inspiration, the miter was modeled after a Romanesque bell tower.

In 1930, they were designated as historic landmarks by the National Park Service designated them as historic landmarks.

Traditional Bressan decor from the nineteenth century may be seen everywhere, including in the main building’s furnishings and everyday goods.

Next, check out the barn, which is home to an impressive collection of antique farm equipment and tools.

Take a stroll through the vegetable garden, the orchard, and the fields of corn and hemp.

Bresse farms can trace their lineage back to this farm!

One of the oldest farms in Bresse kept up is the Sougey farm in Montrevel-en-Bresse.

Maria Favier, the final resident of the farm, was an exceptional woman.

People from all across the region and even certain personalities like Brigitte Bardot and Jacky Kennedy flocked to hear her story.

The architectural riches of this magnificent half-timbered farmhouse have earned it renown that extends beyond the confines of the province of Bresse.

With time, you will see old-fashioned details around a massive chimney-hood. These hoods are gradually revealed in its dark surroundings.

Continue along the interpretative route, which will also show you a Bresse poultry farm that is located nearby.

Because of the remarkable bocage legacy, the region that encompasses the structures and consists of approximately forty hectares of meadows that are separated from one another by a network of hedges has been designated as a “sensitive natural area.”

Monastere Royal de Brou (Royal Monastery of Brou)

Monastere Royal de Brou

The final resting place of the French royal family

National Monument status has been bestowed upon the Royal Monastery of Brou, and it was commissioned as a dynasty burial site by one of Renaissance Europe’s most influential ladies.

Margaret of Austria, who was only 24 years old when she became the widow of Philibert le Beau, Duke of Savoy.

She made the passionate decision to construct the royal abbey of Brou as a labor of love in order to pay tribute to the life and legacy of her late husband.

The 16th-century church of Brou boasts a beautiful exterior and colorful roof tiles and several remarkable works of art, most notably the marble effigies in the mausoleums.

The cloisters are as stunning as the gothic architecture, which is considered the best in France (there are three separate cloisters here).

The Museum of Brou is also located on the premises and has several of these paintings in its collection.

The majority of the artworks in the museum date from the 16th to the 17th century and contain some interesting paintings.

Monastere Brou’s gorgeous church is the best part of your tour, so keep it for the end of your trip.

Musée de Brou

If you are trying to find another place with paintings and other artifacts, Musee de Brou is a perfect place for you.

It was built around a monastery and a church by Margaret in the early sixteenth century.

Bourg-en-municipal Bresse’s museum is located in the monastery’s second cloister.

In the 19th century, Thomas Riboud offered his art collection to the city in exchange for the city’s protection of the monastery as a “Monument National.”

He also helped save the monastery from demolition and contributed his art collection to the city.

French and Flemish artists’ works from the 15th to the 19th centuries occupy much of the gallery area.

Bernard van Orley, a favorite of Charles the V of Spain, painted these portraits of the monastery’s founder, Margaret of Austria, and her nephew Emperor Charles V.

There’s also 16th- and 17th-century pottery, furniture, and religious sculpture.

Margaret of Austria’s tomb likewise features a marble upper figure and an alabaster bottom effigy.

In the upper illustration, she is a middle-aged woman in a stately outfit and a crown-like archducal headgear.

History not just in France but from other countries such as Netherland can also be found in this area.

Do not hesitate to visit a wonderful historical place!

Go for a walk around on the fortress walls, just like the guards used to.

In just a 30mins ride from Bourg-en-Bresse you’ll see history through the formation of the house and the street.

This walled hilltop village is one of those sites that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine.

Pérouges is a little town with around 80 antique structures on its meandering cobblestone streets.

The stronghold itself has no date, but its first recorded reference was in the 12th century; therefore, it is assumed to have been built during that time period.

Despite being invaded by French soldiers several times, the town thrived because of its location and accessibility to trade routes.

Because the town is situated between Lyon and Geneva, the region’s craftsmanship and trade developed.

Under the administration of Henri IV, the territory became a part of France in 1601.

A 200-year-old lime tree stands in the central plaza, and you may climb the village’s watchtower, which used to be part of a medieval fortress.

Since 1921, four different versions of the Three Musketeers have been shot on these streets.

Experience another level of history and be amazed by the infrastructure that was built before we even started the year of our calendar!
