Introducing Harbor Hope Cat Rescue

Laura Ritter Carlson – Founder and Director of Harbor Hope Cat Rescue

Hi! I’m Laura Ritter Carlson, founder and director of Harbor Hope Cat Rescue in Gig Harbor, WA. We are an all-volunteer 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of ill, injured, disabled, and special-needs cats. We are fully committed to giving each and every cat thorough diagnostics and treatment, often requiring extensive medical care and rehabilitation. All cats are tested for FeLV and FIV, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for parasites, and given individual medical care as needed. They are kept separate from other cats for at least 21 days to rule out any possible virus transmission and to build trust and a sense of security. They are then integrated with others depending on disposition, age, and dietary needs. Potential adopters are screened by the application process, references are checked, and home visits are made. Adoptions are lifetime guaranteed in that if the family is ever unable to keep the cat for any reason, he/she is returned to HHCR.

How did Harbor Hope Cat Rescue Start? What Are The Challenges Encountered Along The Way?

My incentive to establish HHCR stems from volunteering at the local humane society and knowing firsthand the number of animals euthanized, both healthy and otherwise. I saw how many special-needs cats were euthanized for lack of available care and/or funds for such treatment such as surgery and proper diagnostics. And even due to a lack of knowledge about certain treatable and manageable conditions such as toxoplasmosis and cerebellar hypoplasia.

In 2000, I told my Dad I’d been “fired” as a volunteer foster home for the local humane society for refusing to return a mama cat and her litter for euthanasia simply because they needed antibiotics. He said, “Congratulations,” with not the least hint of sarcasm. He knew this would motivate me to make a difference. And he was right. It was all the incentive I needed to establish my nonprofit rescue. The mama cat and three of her four kittens were all adopted by close friends and vet technicians at my veterinary hospital. I kept the smallest one, who did end up with some neurological challenges but thrived despite them and was a joy in my life for 15 years, leaving us on June 5, 2015. I named him Baci, which means “kisses” in Italian. I used to tell him that Harbor Hope was all his fault. I like to believe he was proud of that.

Tell Us About The Most “Unusual” Animal That Harbor Hope Cat Rescue Has Ever Taken.

When I received a forwarded Craigslist ad from a friend, I thought it was a joke, but when I read it, I realized that a two-legged cat did need a home. Cotton Hill came to HHCR when he was about 2 years old. His family rescued him from a barn in Utah, where they boarded their horse. When they brought the barn owners’ attention to the baby kitten in distress, the owners unwrapped the umbilical cord from his rear legs and turned him back out. The family took the kitten and brought him to a vet, where he ended up losing both rear legs and the last third of his tail. They kept him and moved to Oregon, where they realized they couldn’t handle a cat who sometimes didn’t make it to the litter box and a new toddler. They drove him from Oregon to Gig Harbor, and Cotton made himself at home here at HHCR for another 12 years. He could sometimes become overwhelmed on volunteer days, so the students learned to respectfully give him his space. I explained to them that he could not run and jump and get away if he felt overwhelmed or overstimulated, so we needed to honor his space.

Tell Us About The Most Unique And Creative Fundraising Campaigns That Harbor Hope Cat Rescue Has Done.

“Paws in the Garden” fundraiser: We’ve had volunteer kids (and parents) over for craft days, which included painting and decorating planters for potting plants, making cement stepping stones, cat toys, and greeting cards.

“Adopt a Chair—Give a Cat a Lap” fundraiser: We painted secondhand chairs decoratively, colorfully, and creatively and sold them along with baked goods.

We’ve also done a hosted lunch as a birthday party for the cats, selling pottery, jewelry, watercolor cat art, and quilts donated by local artists. Included was a silent auction with items, meals, and events donated by local area merchants.

Having been a newspaper reporter, I combined my journalism degree and love of animals after I had to say goodbye to Chance, my dog of 15 years, who had originally been a stray and who showed up at my door the summer I graduated from college. The natural result was a book on managing pet loss and grief. Parting Words/Parting Ways is mainly a collection of letters written by people worldwide saying good bye to their pets. These personal tributes join us in a worldwide circle of compassion, assuring us that we are not alone in our grief and that our feelings are normal and healthy, and necessary. 100% of proceeds go to animal rescue, mainly HHCR, but we have donated books to other rescue groups for their fundraising, as well.

Tell Us About The Most Rewarding Part Of Running Harbor Hope Cat Rescue

The most rewarding part of rescue is being instrumental in saving lives, gaining the trust of an abused or fearful cat, and educating young volunteer students. Caring for a cat who has been injured, gaining his trust, and helping him back to health is exceptionally rewarding. Many “feral” cats are not truly feral. Many are “hard strays” who have gone into survival mode. Gaining the trust of these cats is hugely rewarding, and being able to place them, as confident pets, in indoor homes rather than return outdoors is always my primary goal.

What Do You Think Might Be The Greatest Challenge Of Running Harbor Hope Cat Rescue?

The greatest challenge is realizing that I’m not able to save them all. I try to teach and live by the motto: Saving one cat may not change the world, but the world will surely change for that one cat.

Tell Us More About The Volunteers In Harbor Hope Cat Rescue

Our volunteers are school-age students who mainly socialize the cats. They learn about medical conditions, nutrition, disabilities, treatments, and acceptance and that everyone deserves a chance. They learn that just because someone is different does not mean they are any less viable or important in the grand scheme. Hopefully, this knowledge and realization extend to other facets of their lives, including not only cats but all animals, including humans. They witness the fact that these compromised animals are accepting of their conditions and have exceptionally strong wills to survive and thrive. Volunteers know they make a monumental difference in each life. Animals, no matter what they have been through, have an amazing capacity to rebuild their trust in humans. I make sure volunteers realize that when a cat is adopted, they are instrumental in that adoption. It’s a happy event even though we have to say goodbye. They made a difference in that cat’s life. They helped him heal, trust, play, and be happy. They helped him develop into a cat who will be a wonderful addition to some lucky family. They helped him find a home. One 10-year-old girl, after her initial visit to the shelter and introduction to each animal, looked up at me with a smile of realization and said, “These cats don’t have disabilities. They have special abilities.” I hope my volunteers learn as much from me as I learn from them. On the sadder side, sometimes we need to say a permanent goodbye to old and infirm residents, too. I make sure the students know that we did everything we could to keep the cat comfortable and that letting them go is sometimes the final act of kindness and respect we can give them, and that it’s an honor to care for them at that point in their lives and be instrumental in their care. That the cat leaves knowing they were loved, respected, and treasured.

Where Do Most Of The Animals In Harbor Hope Cat Rescue Come From, And What Is The Process For Rescuing And Rehabilitating Them?

Most of our cats come from veterinarian clinics and hospitals — badly injured strays brought in by a good samaritan, cats with medical issues brought in for euthanasia because their family doesn’t want to, or can’t, deal with the issue or pay medical bills.

What Are The Busiest Periods, And How Does Harbor Hope Cat Rescue?

We are consistently busy year-round because of the nature of the cats we take in. While we’ve evolved into more of a sanctuary over the past several years, we will still take cats for vets we work with to avoid convenience euthanasias, to provide life-saving medical procedures and post-operative care, and to give cats a chance at a good life, whether that means becoming healthy enough to be adopted into a new home or retiring at HHCR and making new friends here.

What Animals Does Harbor Hope Cat Rescue Focus On?

All animals deserve a chance, including those with injuries, illnesses, disabilities, and special needs. I teach the volunteers about the different needs of cats, including medical conditions, diagnostics, and treatments. How to approach each cat as an individual with respect to their individual needs, likes, dislikes, and preferences. How to use patience and calmness, and understanding in interacting with cats. My hope is that these lessons extend into other aspects and relationships in their lives and filter into their daily interactions with others.

Tell Us More About Your Events

We have an ongoing towel drive for old, used bath and beach-sized towels to be cut and used as one-time bedding for our room of incontinent cats. My friend calls them “sacrificial linens.”

We were chosen to be recipients of all proceeds from a beer garden at a Saturday Night Market Saturday, August 12, 19, 26, and Saturday, September 2, 2023, with vendors, food, and live music at a home decor shop, White Barn Decor in Belfair, WA.

What Is Done Differently at Harbor Hope Cat Rescue?

We have a Senior-to-Senior program where we place a senior cat with a local senior human and cover expenses. Too often, a person passes away and leaves a cat behind. It’s always nice to be able to place the cat into a similar living environment, but some senior citizens are reluctant to adopt a cat due to expenses or their own health issues. If ever the person is unable to care for the cat, the cat comes back to HHCR. Animals are so integral to good health and happiness, so we provide everything necessary for the cat, including medical care coverage, meal, and litter deliveries, nail trims, etc. In return, both the senior cat and the senior human have a new friend and companionship. I’ve made some pretty special friends, too.

How Has Harbor Hope Cat Rescue Adapted To The Challenges Presented By The Pandemic?

At the very beginning of the pandemic, I was accidentally run over by my Toyota 4Runner SUV. I was home alone and didn’t know the vehicle was in reverse. We are on the property with a long driveway with no close neighbors, and our house is not visible from the road. It was raining, and when I tried to jump in, I slipped and went under the vehicle, and the left front tire ran over me, fracturing my pelvis in three places. I managed to pull myself to the house to call 911. I wasn’t expected to live. I spent a week in the hospital and then was transferred by ambulance to a rehabilitation hospital, where I stayed another week. During this time, and for a few subsequent months while I recovered, several vets and vet tech friends rallied to take care of the animals in the shelter as well as my house. So, the pandemic was a slow time for us for a few reasons! It did make me stop and reevaluate my rescue efforts and decide to focus mainly on the medically needy cats already in residence. It’s been the natural evolution of HHCR over the past several years, but especially with the pandemic, we’ve shifted into more of a sanctuary mode, providing retirement, assisted living, and hospice care. We still will not turn away an injured animal, though.

Share With Us Some Of The Heartwarming Stories Of Animals Rehabilitated And Rehomed By Harbor Hope Cat Rescue

Timmy was living in a small, very cluttered, and unclean apartment in a county north of us with way too many people and way too many animals. He was a 9-month-old tabby, unneutered and cowering behind a water heater in the corner of the apartment among filth and boxes. His ears were back in confusion, and his eyes were slits of fear and distrust. A young teenager in the home asked me to make sure that “no one ever hits or kicks or calls him bad names.” She said he was born on July 4, 2013. Timmy’s mobility was limited because his front legs bent in at the elbows, and he skittered and slid around precariously. A visit with two orthopedic surgeons confirmed that he was born with radial agenesis (no radius bones in his front legs). He had visits with the surgeons once or twice a week for cast changes in an attempt to rotate his legs into a more normal, and hopefully comfortable position. I consulted with a physical therapist and did physical therapy with him at the shelter to build his muscles and make them strong. The orthopedic surgeons said this was all experimental because normally cats like Timmy either fail to thrive or are euthanized. Those were not options for us. The doctors measured Timmy’s limbs several times and ordered custom removable splints from Virginia. This was new, as the company makes them for dogs, but everyone was on board to make small, Timmy-sized ones in an effort to help this special little feline. The splints did not work as we had hoped, but it was worth the effort. As months passed, Timmy played, made friends with other cats and people, gained weight, and, more importantly, gained trust and security. He was becoming the cat he wanted to be. The cat he was meant to be. He now runs, jumps, climbs, makes valiant attempts at using his scratching posts, and thinks every cat is his very best friend. He is a favorite among the staff at the specialist hospital, and they all converge on him with greetings, admiration, and hugs when he arrives. Now happy, healthy, and well-adjusted, Timmy soaks up the attention and graces them with his charm. Every year on his birthday, Independence Day, I tell him that the fireworks are for him — to celebrate his birthday, his independence, and his health, as well as our happiness that he is a part of our lives.

Captain was an 8-year-old declawed tabby male when he was brought to a vet clinic for convenience euthanasia. They wouldn’t do it, of course, so they called me to see if I would take him. He was underweight, had a heart murmur, and was extremely withdrawn and shy. After an echocardiogram, the cardiologist prescribed oral medication, and during the following eight months, Captain gained weight, and his murmur resolved. He was ready for adoption. He was adopted and lived with an older single woman for four years. He was 12 years old when she planned a move from Washington to Alabama, I set her up with everything she and Captain could possibly need for the road trip. For some unknown reason, she let him out in Montana, and being the shy and scared cat he was; he ran off. She texted me and left town the next day. I worked with rescue people in that area on a daily basis, stayed in contact with veterinarian clinics there, advertised on all the Lost Pet online sites and radio stations, and blasted social media, asking people to share the lost notice far and wide. I hired a tracker and his dogs and purchased wildlife trail cameras that overlooked the humane traps set in the nearby woods. I saw him go into the trap partway and then back out. After 37 days, I couldn’t stand it any longer, so I took time off from work and drove to Montana. I canvassed the area, knocked on doors, and scoured the woods. On Day 40 of his being lost, I found him by some Dumpsters. He was down to 5 lbs from his normal 12. He had gravel in his stomach from foraging for food and was anemic. He stayed two weeks in the vet hospital in Montana, where he was closely monitored as they fed, medicated, and rehydrated him. I drove back to pick him up, and he actually lived with me after that. I couldn’t let him go again. He was with me for 17 months. We lost him to what the oncologist called a rare and inoperable, untreatable cancer.

Liberty, a tiny tabby and white kitty, came to us in mid-July one year. I had a phone call from a resident of a poor neighborhood that a cat had been hanging around someone’s porch. They said the cat had something tied to her tail for several days. I brought her to my vet. She was less than a year old and unspayed. Someone had tied firecrackers to her tail and lit them. Her tail was necrotic and had to be amputated, and she had burns on her belly. She was so gentle and appreciative of good care and food and comfort. She went with me when I spoke at a library about the link between animal cruelty and violence against humans. She was so well-mannered and friendly and worked the room, walking around and making friends with everyone! She was adopted by a single man in Seattle and is doing exceptionally well.

I was working (at my paying job) when I received a call from a former adopter telling me about a stray cat in his neighborhood. I stalled a little, being at work, having a full shelter, and wondering whether the cat truly needed help or had a family in the area. That’s when he texted me a photo. She was obviously non-visual and needed help. I authorized drop-off at my vet where she was examined and referred to an ophthalmologist we saw the next day. He diagnosed her with eosinophilic keratitis and started her on a couple of meds. Staff at the compounding pharmacy read the doctor’s writing of the name as “Shay” rather than “stray,” so that’s how this little girl was named. The volunteer kids and I took weekly photos to monitor Shay’s progress.

Harbor Hope partnered with the Washington State Correctional Center for Women, and after about six months when Shay was healed, she moved to prison and lived with an inmate for about a year. Then Covid hit, and Shay returned to the shelter. The inmate was heartbroken and expressed interest in adopting Shay when she was released In the next month Shay’s friend was transferred across the state, entered a work release program, became a veterinary technician, and rented her own apartment. All in the space of about a year. Finally, when all the stars aligned, Shay traveled 8 hours to her old friend and her new home. She remembered her person and settled in right away. She is still there, happy, healthy, and very loved.
